The Joy Ranch Story
In August
2002, Joy Ranch officially became part of Lutherans
Outdoors. Joy Nelson,
a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown,
gifted her property, home, and buildings to Lutherans
Outdoors.
Joy purchased
this acreage in 1989. It has beautiful rolling hills
overlooking a small lake. Joy built a home for herself
and her horses, and now wants to share this gorgeous area
with others, especially children with special needs and
challenges.
A study
revealed there are more than 14,000 children who have
special needs (diabetes, cancer, muscular dystrophy,
developmental disabilities, asthma, emotional and behavioral
disorders, etc.) in South Dakota.
Joy Ranch will
be developed into a much needed, fully accessible camp and
retreat center, set to open in June 2009. Joy Ranch will
be open to ALL people - NOT JUST FOR Lutherans, NOT JUST FOR
kids with special needs, but for ALL OF US TOGETHER.
